Anger can range in intensity from annoyance to rage.
How do you deal with your anger? Are you allowed to acknowledge that you are angry? Do you feel safe to feel anger? Are you afraid that if you get angry that bad things will happen? Do you struggle with exploding anger?
Whatever your thoughts or experiences with anger are, know that the emotion of anger is a “normal emotion”. How anger is dealt with is important. If anger is stuffed and pushed down with every “they didn’t mean it”, “it was an accident”, “it isn’t personal”, then it gets stuck inside the body and accumulates until, when least expected, it erupts! A seemingly insignificant incident can set it off resulting in unexpected screaming, yelling, and or punching in the air.
There is a physicality to anger that needs to be released in an appropriate way. Find out more about how the body reacts to anger by visiting “https:// www.nicabm.com/how-anger-affects-the-brain-and-bodyinfoCartoon/”.
Be aware of the three rules of dealing with anger:
1. Don’t harm yourself.
2. Don’t harm anyone else.
3. No destroying other people’s property.
Some ways to release the anger appropriately:
1. Go for a walk. Stomp the ground if it helps.
2. Find a safe place away from others to yell about what it is that you are angry about. Inside a car with the windows rolled up is one option.
3. Draw it out. Literally get crayons or colored pencils and paper and scribble out whatever you are mad about.
